This is useful if you want to take a break and do some skilling, or just need some extra storage space for a short time period. Keep in mind some worn armour/weapons are affected by this (Chaotics and colored slayer helms disappear, Barrows/Nex gear degrade, etc.), so ALWAYS make sure you don't have any important items that are permanently lost or made unusable on death.

This can be a great alternative source of supplies that you won't have to carry in your inventory perpetually, freeing up valuable inventory space and reducing your overall risk.
